CLASSIFICATION:  AERIAL LIFT MECHANIC I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of a tramway and other aerial and surface type ski-lifts and general park maintenance.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Installs, maintains and repairs tramway and other types of aerial and surface ski-lifts with special emphasis on drive machinery, cables, sheaves, structural condition of towers, operating equipment and safety devices.

 

·        Makes daily inspections of tramway or chair lifts which involves riding the top of a car, to insure safety of operation.

 

·        Performs skilled trade work in connection with carpentry, electrical, welding, rigging and painting assignments.

 

·        Maintains and repairs water supply and sprinkler systems, heating systems, sewage disposal units and communications lines.

 

·        Performs limited machinist's work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity for completing work assignments.  This level includes work-related accidents or assault.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium to heavy work, including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or climbing.

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

Independent Action:  Requires a range of choice in applying a number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and in making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures for approval by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or it's equivalent and completion of apprenticeship training or its equivalent in one of the trades such as carpentry, electrical, rigging or machinist work.

 

Experience:  Two years' experience in general maintenance and repair work.

 

License/Certification:  Valid New Hampshire driver's license.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must be able to climb and have no fear of working in high places.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of various trades such as welding, rigging, mechanics, carpentry and electrical work.  Ability to recognize the existence of hazardous conditions and to make such corrections as are necessary.  Working knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment and methods of the various trades.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
