BASIC PURPOSE: To operate a pavement marking carriage for
the purpose of applying various pavement markings on the State maintained
highway system and to perform maintenance and repairs on equipment as required.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates paint
spraying equipment, regulating air and paint pressure valves during operation
to ensure proper flow of pavement marking materials.

Supervises a
crew during the loading of paint and beads onto the striper, ensuring that
procedures are followed and tasks are accomplished in a safe and timely manner.

Trains crew
members on procedures for loading striper and assists Foreman with other
training duties.
·
Performs routine
maintenance of paint spraying equipment and striper.
·
Operates a
computer for the logging of daily work reports.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in recommending routine
changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling, and
reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex
machines.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using business or
trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of
services to the public or other state agencies.
Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test
results and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires partial supervision of other employees
doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning
job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
an adverse working environment containing a combination of disagreeable
elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity for completing
work assignments. This level includes
work-related accidents or assault.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including continuous
strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as
performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination
in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions to
establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical
problems. This level also requires
providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization
exists.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of choices
in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and
in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or
procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of high school, G.E.D. or its
equivalent.
Experience: Two years’ experience in a position
concerned with the maintenance or construction of state or local highways or
experience with the application of highway markings. Each additional year of approved work experience
may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
License/Certification: Must possess a valid Commercial
Driver’s License (Class B) with appropriate endorsements. Also must possess a Forklift Operator
certificate.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be available for
non-traditional work hours including evening and overnight work.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Ability to make minor repairs on paint
spraying equipment. Ability and
dexterity to coordinate valves and levers for painting varied patterns on the
highways. Ability to establish and
maintain harmonious relationships with other employees and the general
public. Must be willing to maintain
appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by
the agency appointing authority.
