BASIC PURPOSE:  To coordinate a combination of religious programs including providing spiritual guidance, religious services and pastoral counseling for the residents of state institutions.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Develops and conducts formal religious services for residents or employees.

 

·        Advises and counsels residents in religious matters and makes recommendations or referrals to other departments.

 

·        Gathers and presents information from counseling sessions to other staff in order to coordinate therapy and religious counseling goals. 

 

·        Coordinates volunteer religious activities held at the institution and supervises the assisting volunteers.

 

·        Speaks to community groups and discusses the care, treatment and rehabilitation of residents at a state institution.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in developing formats and procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the use of equipment and data for a specialized function.

 

Knowledge:  Requires logical or scientific expertise to resolve problems of a specialized or professional nature in a wide range of applications.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for achieving direct service objectives by assessing agency service needs and making preliminary recommendations for the development of alternative short-term program policies or procedures.  Errors at this level result in incomplete assessments or misleading recommendations causing a disruption of agency programs or policies.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires light work, including continuous walking or operating simple equipment for extended periods of time as well as occasional strenuous activities such as reaching or bending.

 

Communication:  Requires summarizing data, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to solving problems and achieving work objectives.  This level also requires presenting information for use by administrative-level managers in making decisions.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

 

 

Independent Action:  Requires objective assessment in analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional or administrative standards.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Ordination, or its equivalent, as a minister, priest, or rabbi with a bachelor's degree in religious studies or its equivalent from an accredited seminary.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Three years' experience in an ordained or lay ministerial position in a church, institution, or para-church organization sanctioned by a recognized denomination.

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of individual and group spiritual guidance and counseling.  Thorough knowledge of the habits, attitudes and interests of persons under restraint.  Ability to direct the spiritual development of residents.  Ability to establish harmonious relationships with administrative officials and employees.  Ability to deal harmoniously and effectively with residents and their relatives.  Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
