BASIC PURPOSE:  To supervise the placing and maintaining of signs for highways in an assigned district.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Locates and supervises the erection and maintenance of regulatory, directional, warning guide and speed signs in an assigned district.

 

·        Inspects signs, making major and minor adjustments when needed.

 

·        Supervises an assigned crew including training them in the proper methods used in sign erection.

 

·        Prepares weekly reports on activities, time and stock, cost distribution and truck mileage.

 

·        Maintains a file index system of all signs erected in a divisional area.

 

·        Makes recommendations for the location of new signs and performs on-site surveys to determine need.

·        Provides sketches and photos of fatal motor vehicle accidents within the assigned district.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling, and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires direct supervision of other employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work, recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or interviewing applicants for position vacancies.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity for completing work assignments.  This level includes work-related accidents or assault.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires a range of choice in applying a number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures for approval by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.

 

 

Experience:  Three years' experience in sign erection, construction or related activity.

 

Special Qualifications:  Must be able to work at heights of 50 feet or more above the ground.  Must be able to climb on structures at heights of 50 feet or more above the ground.  Must be able to operate a bucket truck.

 

License/Certification:  New Hampshire Commercial Operators License (CDL Class B) and Air Brakes Certificate of Training.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of state laws and state and national standards as they apply to signs, signals and road marking.  Knowledge of the various types of highway signs and their placement.  Working knowledge of the principles of highway grade and alignments.  Some knowledge of electrical signs and traffic control devices.  Ability to plan and execute an adequate and efficient work program.  Skill in basic use of computers.  Ability to read blueprints, follow instructions and prepare reports.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
