CLASSIFICATION:  AUDIT TECHNICIAN

BASIC PURPOSE:  To audit and process for payment accounting data concerning financial transactions such as expenditures, payroll or personnel actions.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Examines manifests and supporting documents to determine accuracy and authenticity of purchases and expenditures.

 

·        Contacts agency accounting staff or vendors to verify or correct payment discrepancies.

 

·        Prepares manifests for payment and computes discounts when appropriate.

 

·        Audits computer print-outs by comparing documentary evidence and makes corrections and adjustments to the computer.

 

·        Encumbers contract expenditures and records same to insure contract expenditure specifications are met and not exceeded.

 

·        Maintains control records of rental agreements for equipment and vehicles.

 

·        Applies cost code information as part of the payroll process.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions under good conditions in a safe working environment.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires sedentary work, including continuous sitting or occasional standing and walking.

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

 

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent with courses in business, including arithmetic and bookkeeping.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Three years' experience in bookkeeping or auditing. 

 

License/Certification:  None required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of general mathematics.  Knowledge of the operation of calculators and other business office machines.  Knowledge of auditing techniques.  Knowledge of state laws and regulations pertaining to the administration of expenses.  Skill in arithmetical calculations.  Skill in operating electronic calculators.  Ability to examine forms with accuracy.  Ability to follow procedural instructions.  Ability to compute discounts.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other state employees and vendors.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
