CLASSIFICATION:  AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNICIAN

BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform lubrication, minor repair and scheduled routine automotive maintenance to assure compliance with state safety requirements.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Maintains and installs automotive equipment or parts to ensure proper maintenance.

 

·        Checks automotive equipment using testing devices.

 

·        Compiles records and log books for reporting completed inspections, repairs and maintenance.

 

·        Performs standardized inspections on vehicles, recording necessary vehicle information as required.

 

·        Replaces brake-linings, starters and exhaust systems not requiring journeymen level of skill.

 

·        Goes to local automotive parts dealers and obtains parts necessary to repair vehicles.

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

 

Experience:  One year's experience performing automotive service functions in the automotive service field, preferably certified as a motor vehicle inspector by the Department of Safety.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  Must possess a current driver's license.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of standard methods, tools and equipment of the trade and skill in their use and some knowledge of welding and hydraulics.  Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.  Ability to perform heavy manual work.  Ability to use mechanical tools with a reasonable degree of skill.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow worker and superiors.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
