BASIC PURPOSE: To perform maintenance and custodial
work in the operation of low pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fires boilers,
maintaining proper steam pressure and water levels.
·
Lubricates pumps and
cleans flues.
·
Reads meters and
inspects boiler room operations according to a prescribed schedule.
·
Registers at regular
watch stations as a record of inspection rounds completed at specified times.
·
Cleans buildings and
grounds, including sweeping, dusting, cleaning toilets, shoveling snow, sanding
walks and maintaining lawns and shrubbery.
·
Lifts and carries
furniture, supplies and equipment; makes minor repairs.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires common sense understanding of
instructions in performing a series of routine procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support
activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of others or have
measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in
order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires minimal personal interaction
or communication, including providing simple information in response to routine
questions from employees within the agency.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires minimal choice in performing
routine duties under immediate supervision and in following simple instructions
according to standardized policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of eighth grade or its
equivalent, possessing the ability to follow written or verbal instructions and
use simple mathematics. Additional
years of formal education may not be substituted for the work experience
required by this class specification.
Experience: One year's experience in general firing
of a low pressure boiler.
Additional years of related work experience may not be substituted for
the formal education required by this class specification.
License/Certification: None required.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of and ability to operate
boiler and auxiliary equipment.
Ability to maintain steam pressure for heating. Knowledge of cleaning. Ability to make minor repairs. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
