CLASSIFICATION:  BRIDGE MAINTAINER I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To assist other Bridge Maintainers in one of the construction, building or mechanical trades and to perform routine tasks in bridge construction, repair or maintenance.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Performs all work connected with bridge construction and maintenance, to include masonry, carpentry, sandblasting, scraping, chipping, painting, paving, welding, cutting, and safety and security inspections.

·        Assists in the assembly and installation of temporary bridges such as Bailey Bridges and construction bridges.

·        Demolishes or repairs existing structures and performs such work as building forms, finishing concrete and using rigging.

·        Assists in the use of rigging slings, scaffolding and staging for safe lifting of material and equipment for repair, painting or construction purposes.

·        Operates and maintains machinery and equipment such as air compressors, welders, pneumatic pavement breakers, and other construction equipment.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires common sense understanding of instructions in performing a series of routine procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires minimal responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work activities within a small organizational unit.  Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job assignments in an adverse working environment involving a variety of unpredictable elements or hazards, including exposure to injuries or hazardous materials which result in partial disability.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires heavy work, including continuous physical exertion in a taxing work position such as lifting and dragging heavy objects or digging. 

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of two years of high school or its equivalent.

 

Experience:  One year's experience as a laborer or helper in work concerned with maintenance, painting, building, mechanical or construction trades.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  Possession of a valid driver’s license.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Ability to understand and carry out instructions.  Ability to work under hazardous conditions.  Ability to use hand tools with reasonable degree of skill.  Ability to perform semi-skilled tasks from detailed instructions.  Ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above ground.  Ability to use personal protective equipment properly and to understand and apply procedures relating to work zone safety, health, personnel rules, and hazardous materials.  Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers and the general public.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
