CLASSIFICATION:  CARPENTER II

BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform skilled finish carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of state facilities, furniture or equipment.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Performs general carpentry work and maintenance on structures and buildings using specifications and blueprints.

 

·        Performs skilled bench work in a carpentry shop and operates power saws, jointers, routers, sanding and mortising machines, wood surfacing planers, drill pressers and wood lathes.

 

·        Sharpens and maintains power and hand tools.

·        Instructs helpers in basic trade tasks and supervises manual workers.

 

·        Performs incidental pattern or cabinet-making as required.

 

·        May repair or replace broken plaster on ceramic and resilent tiles.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

 

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical problems.  This level also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization exists.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent and completion of a (8,000 hour) standard carpentry apprenticeship training.

 

Experience:  Two years' experience in carpentry work at the journeyman level.  Each additional year of carpentry work may be substituted for 2000 hours of carpentry apprenticeship training.

 

License/Certification:  Possession of a valid driver’s license and/or have access to transportation for travel, if necessary.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the trade and the qualities and uses of various woods.  Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.  Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment used in the carpentry trade.  Ability to work from specifications and blueprints and to carry out orders.  Ability to climb and work in high places.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
