BASIC PURPOSE:  To operate a cosmetology shop within a state institution and to provide proper hair care for residents.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Performs cosmetology work such as facial and scalp treatments and related services.

 

·        Organizes daily schedule to accommodate resident/patient/client needs.

 

·        Requisitions shop supplies and equipment, keeps records of work scheduled, work performed and supplies used.

 

·        Gives manicures, removes superfluous hair and performs other related cosmetology treatment as needed.

 

·        Maintains the shops and equipment in a sanitary condition.

 

·        Prepares reports of activities, including statistics concerning residents who use cosmetology services.

 

·        Visits wards to care for residents or patients too ill to be taken to the shop.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity for completing work assignments.  This level includes work-related accidents or assault.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school, G.E.D. or it's equivalent, plus 1500 hours of cosmetology.

 

Experience:  Two years' experience as a cosmetologist.

 

License/Certification:  Valid cosmetology license from the New Hampshire Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of the modern methods and techniques of cosmetology.  Considerable knowledge of the operation of cosmetology equipment.  Skill in giving hair, facial and related treatments.  Ability to assign and supervise the work of other cosmetologists.  Ability to keep records of work schedules, cosmetology operations, supplies and materials.  Ability to work with and maintain a empathetic attitude towards mentally and/or physically ill residents.  Ability to supervise and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and other state employees.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
