BASIC PURPOSE: To learn the work of a Geological
Exploration Technician I and assist a Geological Exploration Technician III in
the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of geological exploration
equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data required for the design
and construction of NH DOT projects.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Trains while
assisting the Geological Equipment Technician III in all aspects of mobilizing,
operating, and maintaining test boring equipment, and in performing subsurface
explorations in accordance with standard procedures.

Operates a truck to
move test boring equipment to work site.
·
Learns how to
mobilize test boring equipment in areas of difficult and dangerous access, such
as rivers, lakes, roadways, and steep hillsides.
·
Learns how to, and
assists in making field repairs and in performing scheduled maintenance on test
boring equipment.
·
Learns how to, and
assists in setting up and implementing traffic control procedures when
necessary in accordance with bureau policies and procedures.
·
Learns how to, and
assists the G.E.T. III in the performance of undisturbed sampling of cohesive
soils, vane shear testing, and geotechnical instrumentation installing.
·
Learns how to, and
assists in keeping an accurate and complete field log of each exploration
including soil classification, bedrock information, groundwater measurements,
and other pertinent information when required.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires minimal skill in performing a
series of routine procedures OR in operating equipment according to
standardized instructions.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires minimal responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work
activities within a small organizational unit. Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are
readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical Demands: Requires medium to heavy work,
including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting, or
climbing.
Communication: Requires minimal personal interaction
or communication, including providing simple information in response to routine
questions from employees within the agency.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires minimal choice in performing
routine duties under immediate supervision and in following simple instructions
according to standardized policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or
its equivalent.
Experience: One year experience as an Engineering
Aide or Laborer, 6 months of which must have been in the operation of heavy
power equipment.
License/Certification: Possession of a valid Class A Commercial
Driver's License from the state in which the employee resides. Selected candidates not possessing the
required commercials driver's license at the time of appointment must obtain
the required license during their probationary period. Failure to do so will result in
dismissal or demotion.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the operation of core and
auger boring equipment and drilling apparatus. Knowledge of the properties and physical characteristics of
subsurface rock and soil strata.
Knowledge of the operation of combination auger-core boring equipment
and drilling apparatus. Ability to
safely operate assigned drilling equipment and make minor field adjustments as
required. Ability to maintain
accurate records of work performed.
Ability to lift heavy objects and to work under adverse weather
conditions. Must be willing to
work "out of town" when necessary. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to
assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the appointing authority.
