BASIC PURPOSE: To plan and conduct guided tours and
provide natural history, social and cultural information concerning state parks
and historical/natural landmarks for the public.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans, organizes and
conducts tours through state parks or historical landmarks.
·
Prepares and operates
audio-visual equipment to present programs on topics relevant to the state park
or historical/natural landmarks.

Performs peripheral
research on the national or social/cultural history of the park or landmark.
·
Promotes special
interest programs within the state park.
·
Coordinates with the
Park Naturalist to plan seasonal interpretive programs for the park.
·
Collects statistical
data on interpretive program participants.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires minimal responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work
activities within a small organizational unit. Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are
readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
equivalent.
Experience: One year's experience in public
speaking or experience related to natural science, earth science, or a related
field.
License/Certification: None required.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Working knowledge of geology, earth
science or natural science.
Ability to deal courteously with the general public in conducting guided
tours through the park complex.
Ability to address groups effectively. Ability to work with the public tactfully, courteously and
effectively. Ability to learn and
perform appropriate craft demonstrations.
Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties
and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
