BASIC PURPOSE:  To perform hand and machine sewing and mending work involving a variety of items within a state institution; does related work as required.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·           Performs diversified duties involving hand and machine sewing, altering and mending clothing, linens and other articles.

 

·           Manufactures items such as strong blankets, draperies, clothing, bags, shower curtains and aprons.

 

·           Follows patterns required in the cutting of materials for garments and sews them.

 

·           Creates new pattern for special needs items within the institution.

 

·           Maintains sewing machines, insuring that they are properly oiled and cleaned on a regular basis.

 

·           Takes measurements for drapes, curtains, etc. in other buildings on the grounds.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of different purposes.

 

Knowledge:  Requires common sense understanding of instructions in performing a series of routine procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires minimal responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work activities within a small organizational unit.  Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of two years of high school, or its equivalent.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  One year experience in general hand and machine sewing operations.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  None requires.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Knowledge of textiles, sewing and mending methods.  Skill in the operation of electric sewing and buttonhole machine and other sewing equipment.  Ability to instruct others in sewing and mending.  Ability to cut materials by using patterns.  Ability to maintain proper records of work accomplished.  Ability to get along with people and maintain an empathic attitude towards the mentally ill.  Must possess good eyesight to permit long hours of sewing.  Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assign duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
