BASIC PURPOSE: To patrol and maintain trails and
slopes and perform mountain rescue work; does related work as required.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Patrols and maintains ski areas to
ensure adherence to ski rules and regulations.
o Administers first aid to persons
injured while using park facilities.
o Operates ski lifts and related
equipment including snow vehicles.
o Participates in chairlift
evacuation and mountain rescues of persons, sometimes in remote areas.
o Prepares initial injury reports
concerning ski related accidents.
o Inspects ski lifts and reports
suspected problems to supervisor.
o Transports and unloads trucks of
lime, seeds or fertilizers.
o Constructs foot bridges and hiking
trails.
o Operates cats and graders in rough
excavating and sub-grading operations.
o Performs maintenance work such as
painting, plumbing and fence repair.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires understanding and using
business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating
procedures.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support
activities within one or more organizational units. Errors at this level affect the work of others or have
measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in
order to complete succeeding work operations.
Supervision: Requires partial supervision of other
employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including
assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking
work.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical
elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure
to minor injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires heavy work, including
continuous physical exertion in a taxing work position such as lifting and
dragging heavy objects or digging.
Communication: Requires obtaining and exchanging
information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to
questions from state employees or members of the general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve
practical problems. This level
also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited
standardization exists.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or
its equivalent.
Experience: Two years' experience in the operation
of heavy construction equipment and/or ski patrol work.
License/Certification: Certification as an Emergency Medical
Technician or equivalent First Aid Training.
Special Requirements: Must be an expert skier.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Ability to operate and make minor
repairs and adjustments on heavy mechanical equipment. Ability to establish and maintain
harmonious working relationships with fellow workers and the public. Must be willing to maintain appearance
appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency
appointing authority.
