CLASSIFICATION:  TOLL ATTENDANT I

BASIC PURPOSE:  To ensure that revenues due from all vehicles using the New Hampshire Turnpike system are collected and traffic is expedited through the toll plaza.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Classifies vehicles by description in order to determine proper toll assessment.

 

·        Ensures that proper revenue is collected according to category and method of payment, including cash, computerized charge cards, tokens or non-revenue.

 

·        Gives minimal information to the traveling public on traffic conditions, weather, mileage, emergency services and routes.

 

·        Maintains a free vehicle register.

 

·        Provides security for the revenue collected.

 

·        Performs housekeeping duties in and around toll booths and the toll station.

 

·        May be required to exercise complete charge of the work unit in the absence of the supervisor.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires understanding and using business or trades vocabulary or basic arithmetic to perform standard operating procedures.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by ensuring the accuracy of support activities within one or more organizational units.  Errors at this level affect the work of others or have measurable monetary consequences, and require verification and correction in order to complete succeeding work operations.

 

Supervision:  Requires no supervision of employees or functions.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source, or responding to questions from state employees or members of the general public.

 

 

Complexity:  Requires a minimal combination of job functions, including performing frequently repeated tasks according to set procedures and standardized situations.

 

Independent Action:  Requires making a limited number of choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed policies or procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Completion of high school, G.E.D. or its equivalent.

 

Experience:  Six months' experience in public contact work preferably involving the receiving of cash and change making or the equivalent.

 

License/Certification:  Depending on location of the position, a N.H. operator’s license may be required.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Ability to make change quickly and accurately.  Ability to follow instructions.  Ability to meet the public and to answer questions in a pleasant and courteous manner.  Ability to count money and to prepare simple records.  Ability  to work exposed to various climatic conditions with exposure to exhaust fumes.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
