BASIC PURPOSE: To perform journeyman level welding mechanic
work on fleet equipment and to assist in supervising Welder Mechanics in the
performance of welding, mechanical fabrication or repair activities.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in
supervising the laying out, cutting, straightening, and fitting of materials
for welding.
·
Designs and
selects materials and constructs various equipment components such as flatbed
bodies, tandem axle trailers, and highway paint striping units.
·
Performs
welding of highway construction and maintenance equipment and machinery.
·
Monitors the
design, fabrication and installation of plow mount components.
·
Works with
computer controlled hydraulic software/hardware, sensors, and programming.
·
Installs,
adjusts, repairs and replaces hydraulic systems.
·
Maintains and
makes minor repairs on welder equipment.
·
Operates
heliac welder equipment in welding aluminum fabrications.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in recommending routine
changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling, and
reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.
Knowledge: Requires knowledge of business practices and
procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from
detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.
Impact: Requires responsibility for contributing to
immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of
services to the public or other state agencies.
Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results
and require a significant investment of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing related or similar work, including scheduling work,
recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance appraisal, or
interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job functions in
an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a
number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor
injuries or health hazards.
Physical Demands: Requires medium to heavy work, including
continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting, or climbing.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions to
establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve practical
problems. This level also requires
providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited standardization
exists.
Independent Action: Requires a range of choice in applying a
number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and
making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures
for approval by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or its
equivalent and completion of apprenticeship training as a welder. An Associate’s degree in a related
mechanical trade may be substituted for the apprenticeship training.
Experience: Two year’s experience as a journeyman
welder. Two years of additional
experience as a journeyman welder can be substituted for the apprenticeship or
Associate’s degree.
License/Certification: Valid New Hampshire’s driver’s
license. Possession of a valid New
Hampshire Class B Commercial operator’s license with airbrake endorsements.
RECOMMENDED WORK
TRAITS: Working knowledge of and skill in the use of
methods, materials, tools and equipment of the welding trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and
safety precautions of the trade. Must
have a working knowledge of hydraulics and the skills to assemble hydraulic
systems. Working knowledge of the use of
electronic sensors and computers for the operation of hydraulic systems. Ability to follow oral and written
instructions. Ability to read
plans. Ability to assist in supervising
a crew of journeyman welders. Ability to
establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other
employees. Must be willing to maintain
appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by
the agency appointing authority.
